Effect of Luminance on Night Driving Performance of Younger-old and Older-old Adults

چکیده
ABSTRACT Little research has been conducted to understand the difference in driving performance between younger-old adults (60-75 years) and older-old adults (76+ years), or simply younger olds and older olds. The main objective of this study was to determine if a minimal increase in road light level (luminance) differently affects the performance of these two distinct age groups. Older adults were tested in a driving simulator following vision and cognitive screening. Comparisons were made for the performance of simulated night driving of the two age groups under two road light conditions (0.6 cd/m 2 and 2.5 cd/m 2 ). At each light level, the effects of participant age were examined along with the vision/cognitive performance. It was found that increasing road light level from 0.6 cd/m 2 to 2.5 cd/m 2 resulted in different effects on night driving performance depending on the age of the participant. It is concluded that while increasing road lighting may be helpful to some older adults, younger and older olds vary in terms of cognition, attention, and confidence and these factors need to be considered in road lighting design.

Effect of Increasing Road Light Luminance on Night Driving Performance of Older Adults
The main objective of this study was to determine if a minimal increase in road light level (luminance) could lead to improved driving performance among older adults. Older, middleaged and younger adults were tested in a driving simulator following vision and cognitive screening. Comparisons were made for the performance of simulated night driving under two road light conditions (0.6 and 2.5 cd...
متن کاملVisual acuity measured with luminance-modulated and contrast-modulated noise letter stimuli in young adults and adults above 50 years old
The human visual system is sensitive in detecting objects that have different luminance level from their background, known as first-order or luminance-modulated (LM) stimuli. We are also able to detect objects that have the same mean luminance as their background, only differing in contrast (or other attributes). Such objects are known as second-order or contrast-modulated (CM), stimuli. CM sti...
متن کاملEffect of Different Cognitive Loads on Gait Stability in Younger and Older Adults
Purpose: As many older people fall during dual tasks, we aimed to examine the effect of different cognitive loads on learning gait stability in younger and older adults. Methods: 10 younger (Mean±SD age: 25.91±3.42 years) and 10 older adults (Mean±SD: 66.65±4.28 years) were healthy volunteers without a history of falls. They were asked to do three tasks on a treadmill with cognitive load (none...
متن کاملMotor Learning and Movement Performance: Older versus Younger Adults
Introduction: Motor skills play an important role during life span, and older adults need to learn or relearn these skills. The purpose of this study was to investigate how aging affects induction of improved movement performance by motor training. Methods: Serial Reaction Time Test (SRTT) was used to assess movement performance during 8 blocks of motor training. Participants were tested i...
